Birthright A Novel Thomas Sigismund Stribling 9781278586045 Books

Set during the Wilson administration, this is an unsettling novel about an African-American from Tennessee who returns to his small town after getting a degree at Harvard. Written by a white man from Tennessee, the book exposes the evils of the institutionalized racism of that time and place. Stribling is sympathetic to the trials of the former slaves and their descendants, but occasionally he falls into what a reader of today might consider stereotyping. There is frequent use of the "n" word, as it was accepted by most people in those days. I found the story touching, and I don't think I will ever forget some of the abuses described. For instance, if a white person reported a theft to the police, the police would get a warrant to search the homes of every non-white in town. Talk about racial profiling!

I'm surprised that Stribling isn't read much nowadays. He did win a Pulitzer prize for one of his other novels. His writing is colorful and well-paced. Although disturbing, "Birthright" held my interest.

I have not determined whether I liked or disliked the book. I can only say the author knows his craft. The rest is unsettled.
Just goes to so that the more things change the more they stay the same. Peter went to Harvard but did he really learn anything? Being white, this was hard for me to read but perhaps I learned something.
